WeWriWa—The fracas intensifies

Welcome back to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, weekly Sunday hops where writers share 8–10 sentences from a book or WIP. This week’s snippet immediately follows last week’s, as a fight for a piece of moldy bread broke out among some starved prisoners encamped for the night by the Bohemian Forest.

The commotion brought their half-asleep, half-drunken guards barreling out of the farmhouse they’d appropriated for the night.  One of them kicked the outside guards awake, loudly cursing their ineptitude.  All the while, the combatants continued to pummel one another, even as the guards menaced towards them and began shooting.  Amid the fracas, several prisoners began crawling or running away, which sent almost all of the guards charging after them and shooting.  Kálmán just lay low, holding onto Móric and hoping for a bombing raid to kill everyone now.

A boot in the ribcage brought Kálmán out of his reverie. “Don’t just lay there.  You vermin have to dig graves for those corpses, and if you get any funny ideas about revolting or escaping too, you’ll be next.”

  1. A boot to the ribs is better than being shot, but in that prison, no one catches a break. Such a horrible part of history.

  2. Still so grim, but I always appreciate your skillful way of making history live. A nit: if they were being loud enough to wake up guards *inside* the house, why didn’t the outside guards also wake up? Maybe I missed something!
