Welcome back to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, weekly Sunday hops where writers share 8–10 sentences from a book or WIP. This week’s snippet comes a few lines after last week’s, when Violetta suggested Igor go to an art museum with her next Saturday. She suggested a few museums, and Igor said he’d rely on her decision, since ladies should come first.
Violetta decides on the Metropolitan, and asks if Igor can meet her there at 1:00, after they’ve each had lunch. Her mother, however, has a slightly different suggestion.
“Why don’t you come over here first, and we can all have lunch together,” Granyechka suggests. “It’ll be better if you can drive Violetta there and back. I hate how often she takes the subway, but she doesn’t like walking very long distances, not even to her campus and back.”
Violetta gives her mother a strange look.
“Is this a religious thing?” Igor asks. “You don’t think it’s modest or ladylike to walk more than a few blocks alone?”
“A lady can never be too careful,” Violetta says, her face appearing to flood with relief. “You never know who’s lurking about, even in nice neighborhoods.”
“Say, how’d you like to come to my birthday party the day before we go to the Metropolitan? It’s at the Kalvik penthouse, if you know where that is.”
