WeWriWa—An unexpected secret

Welcome back to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, weekly Sunday hops where writers share 8–10 sentences from a book or WIP. This week’s snippet immediately follows last week’s, as Igor has driven Violetta to her apartment on Bleecker Street. When they arrive, Violetta’s baby brother Fernand is kicking a ball in the street with four of his friends.

Violetta limps over to Fernand and whispers to him, a desperate look on her face.  Igor wonders what the big secret is, but can’t imagine it’s anything that serious.  In a religious family like this, it’s probably something silly and tame like Violetta sneaking home ten minutes past an already early curfew.

“Igor, would you mind talking with Ferik while I go upstairs?” Violetta asks. “I don’t want to just bring an uninvited guest in, no matter what my mother insists is okay.” She gives Fernand another strange look.

“Sure.” Igor has a seat on the curb. “So, Fernand, your big sister tells me you were friends with my nephew Feliks.”

Fernand’s little face lights up.

  1. Nice little slice of life snippet. Poor Violetta seems so desperate while Igor is amiable and laid back. Too bad she can’t just trust him (or not yet anyway). Enjoyed the excerpt!

  2. I too am wondering if this has something to do with her leg or if, as he surmises, with their family rules. There seems to be too much anxiety on her part just for brining home an unexpected guest. I’m so interested in how these two will get together!

  3. Okay, what is this girl hiding suddenly. It is so curious. He seems like he’ll be good with kids seeing how he so readily slipped into a friendly manner with Fernand to strike up conversation.
