Welcome back to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, weekly Sunday hops where writers share 8–10 sentences from a book or WIP. This week’s snippet immediately follows last week’s, as Violetta and Igor have moved to a part of the library where they’re at liberty to talk. Violetta has just introduced herself, and now tells Igor a bit about her decision to go to NYU instead of a historic women’s-only college like Barnard or Hunter.
“I’m a first-year art student at the Washington Square women’s campus. I wish I could go up to the real campus in the Bronx for even one class, but the women’s school isn’t too bad considering. I really wanted to go to NYU, to defy people’s expectations I’d go to one of the women’s-only colleges. NYU might not really be co-ed, but at least it has a women’s college for undergrads.”
Igor dares not say he thinks her name matches her exotic features, or even that it’s a very pretty name. He doesn’t want to get slapped and told off before he’s even had a chance to become her friend and ask her out. “My name is Igor. You don’t have to tell me how old-fashioned and heavy it is in comparison to your name.”
“Igor? You must be of Russian descent, with a name like that.”
So funny how he doesn’t want to jump on commenting about her name but she doesn’t have the same reservations.

I enjoy the insight into the heroine, especially her attitude toward the colleges and her choices. Too bad he’s kind of shy about his name but it’s an endearing touch. Great snippet!

I like her self-confidence, especially in the face of his reserve.

She shouldn’t need his name to know he’s Russian. The mere fact that he’s one of your characters should tell her that!

He’s so worried about what she’ll think, and she’d jumping in without hesitation! Maybe he needs to relax.

I’m getting the impression Igor hasn’t met very many nice women in the past. Hope his prospects are looking up with Violetta. LOL

Looks like he didn’t have to worry about speaking his mind. She doesn’t seem to have any qualms in doing so. Enjoyed the snippet. 🙂

She certainly knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to say so! I don’t think poor Igor knows what he’s in for.

My grandma went to Barnard. Graduated in the early 40s, think. 🙂

Great snippet – I find it really incredible to think how different it was for women in this time period and how much determination and guts would have been required to pursue a higher education. She’s really strong but I love that about her. I hope Igor’s up for the challenge!
