WeWriWa— “A very nice boy”

Welcome back to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, weekly Sunday hops where writers share 8–10 sentences from a book or WIP. This week’s snippet comes right after last week’s, as first-year NYU student Igor Konev has asked the woman with sexy feet and exotic hair if she minds company. His cousin Luiza, who briefly detained him on the way, now puts in a good word for him.

She shrugs. “Sure, I don’t see why not, but we can’t talk or whisper too long in this part of the library.  We’ll have to move to one of the private study areas.  Assuming, that is, you’re on the level.”

Luiza leans around the left wall of her carrel. “You can trust him,” she whispers. “He’s my cousin, and a very nice boy.”

“Man, not boy,” Igor corrects her. “I’ll be nineteen on Friday.  I’ve been a real man for almost a year.”

Violetta has already become friends with sophomore Luiza, since they’re both at the Washington Square women’s campus, though she hasn’t had a chance to meet Igor yet. In this era, the main campus was up in University Heights in the Bronx, and it would be some years until NYU became properly co-ed.

  1. Very visual snippet. I can see them leaning around to whisper and feel the looks of the other library-goers who are willing them to shush. Very nice!

  2. Very sweet! I can just picture Igor defending his manhood, though his cousin might always see him as a little boy.

  3. Ah, the sweet innocence of that era! This story is a lovely respite from the world of today.

  4. Great visual exchange. Thanks for sharing this!

  5. You’ve captured the era very nicely. Poor Igor, he’ll always be a boy to his cousin, I think. LOL!

  6. Someone will definitely shush them if they keep it up. Love his claim he’s a ‘real man,’ when I think a lot of people wouldn’t necessarily agree yet.

They make such a sweet couple. Or will make once he gets one with it. 🙂 Sweet snippet.

  8. Ed Hoornaert says:

Ah yes — at that age, one is sensitive to being a man, rather than a boy.

  9. T. M. Hunter says:

Made me snicker, the ‘real man’ comment…perfect personification of a 19-year old.

  10. Karen Michelle Nutt says:

Wonderful imagery. Had me smiling when Igor spoke of being a man for almost year.

  11. hahaha, I wonder how manly he is going to be, I’m not sure his answer makes him a man, too defensive. 🙂

  12. P.T. Wyant says:

Sweet scene. I love that she vouched for him.

  13. I love the way their relationship is unfolding slowly. Really fits with their age and the setting. Great snippet!

Well gosh, a REAL man for almost a whole year? LOL! Ah, the innocence of youth. 😉
