Welcome back to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, weekly Sunday hops where writers share 8–10 sentences from a book or WIP. This snippet comes right after last week’s, as Arkadiya’s important visitors have returned and insisted His Majesty wants her to come to the palace even if she’s sick. She’s been invited to recover in the lap of luxury, and when she’s recovered, she’ll be interviewed for the position of Tsaritsa.

Arkadiya shook her head and went to pack up her things and change into presentable clothes, then opened the door again. “I can’t turn down the offer to stay in a palace for a little while, no matter how absurd the idea of becoming Tsaritsa is.”

One of the visitors carried her suitcases, while she trailed behind them into the lobby.  After she’d signed herself out of the hotel, she followed them to the waiting car, a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.  She was too discombobulated to even process the fact that she was getting a ride in a luxury car for the second time in only about a week.

The car drove through the gates of the Aleksandr Palace thirty minutes later, and Arkadiya was helped out by several servants who came out to greet them.  She had no time or cognizance to absorb the opulence surrounding her as she walked in and was taken to the promised spare room.  Once she was in a large four-poster bed, she fell into a merciful, deep sleep.

Methinks the lady is sleepwalking into love. Or danger. Or both.

  2. Cinderella is one of my most favorite fairy-tales (Everafter is my favorite version of all time). And this story just took a Cinderella twist. I LOVE it! 🙂

  3. Agree with Teresa- I love Cinderella and this story has that vibe in spades. I also love to think that Aleksey would have grown up into the politely persistent gentleman as you portray him.

I feel bad for her that she’s too sick to enjoy the ride and surroundings. I’m really enjoying her “It’s not going to happen/can’t be real” attitude.

Aleksey is such a gentleman in your story. I hope Arkadiya’s health improves so she can enjoy her stay at the palace.

  12. Poor Arkadiya is exhausted. I’m sure all the palace things aren’t helping her nerves either. I hope she’ll get better soon.

  13. I am so with Ed on this one! It’s a bit sad on how resolved she is on “this isn’t going to happen” kind of attitude, like she doesn’t think very highly of herself, or doesn’t hope and dream. Or maybe I just know the feeling too well. Nice snippet.
