This week’s topic in the Express Yourself meme is favorite holiday songs. The local oldies station has become somewhat of a joke for how they start playing 24/7 Christmas music for almost two months. Every year they start earlier and earlier. Once they began after Thanksgiving, then they slowly moved up to Veterans’ Day, and now it’s the day after Halloween. I really want to know who’s actually happy about 24/7 Christmas music for almost two months.
Here are a few holiday songs I can listen to any time of year. You can probably guess from my selection that I have rather progressive political and social views! (Warning: The videos for “Seven o’Clock News/Silent Night” and “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” contain a few strong images.)
This is the final track on Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme, one of my favoritest albums. The ending always sends chills down my spine.
Joyeux Noël is one of the most powerful films I’ve ever seen. It’s about the Christmas Truce of 1914, something that sadly was never allowed to happen again. These guys had a hard time seeing one another as the enemy after they’d broken bread and become friends. I highly recommend this film. The PG-13 rating is for a (tasteful) sex scene between the German tenor Nikolaus Sprink and his Danish girlfriend Anna Sörenson and war violence.
The German tenor’s beautiful singing voice, and the singing voice of his girlfriend, were both voiced by professional singers, not the actors themselves.

I think the Christmas music started later where I live (in Canada). I didn’t notice it until this month. But I listen to a pop station, and they are stingy with their Christmas music.

Wow, Carrie-Anne. Powerful. I’m actually struggling with Christmas music this year for some reason–not sure why. It’s not affecting me in a magical way like it usually does. Need to solve this asap! 🙂

We’ve got a station that went to all Christmas music a few weeks ago. I was over it in about the first day. My kids, on the other hand, think it’s the greatest thing ever. I’ve always been intrigued by the story of the truce. That right there shows people that soldiers on both sides are just people.

Thanks for sharing these. I don’t listen to standard radio, but I miss the Christmas tunes. Here in Miami they replay “Mi Burrito Sabanero,” which is quite catchy. I can listen to that all year long.

I’ve never heard of the last one. Maybe I’ll have to add it in the next week. Unfortunately, there isn’t much Christmas music around here.
